Trends Analysis can be very useful when looking for confirmation that other methods may provide or indeed as a standalone approach when trying to find a value-priced selection that other more traditional methods may overlook. I have had great success with trends analysis, particularly in jumps races but it can play a part on the flat as well.
Below is an example of some of the trends breakdown you can do for a race using the excellent Racecaller website. I have also put in a few of my POW (power), FBR (form), KR (key rating) and RAT (ratio ratings) and this helps build an overall picture of strength behind a potential selection.
You can see for example that my ‘ratings' based picks FRANCIS OF ASSISI, LINE DRUMMER and KARAMAYA are actually towards the bottom of the overall trends. This is not to say they can't win as ratings tend to trump trends in terms of ‘winners' but in terms of profit it can sometimes pay to look for one with a better, overall trends + ratings fit and we have that with the Dermot Weld-trained, Pat Smullen-ridden STUCCODOR who is joint-top of the trends with Regulation but has better overall ratings strength. The ratings suggest he has a bit to find with the O'Brien pair but if we take into account the trends then he has a chance at a value price I think of 11/1 with a few BOG bookmakers.
